2) Humane shelters / SPCAs are not required to hold animals longer than the 5 days mandated under Federal law, but often do so.

3) Humane shelters / SPCAs usually do not pick up strays unless under contract, but do accept strays and owner animals from the public.

4) Some humane shelters / SPCAs hold special pet adoption days and use other forms of adoption advertising.

5) Humane shelters / SPCAs make their own decisions about type of euthanasia to employ, based on Federal restrictions.

3) Animal pounds / dog pounds are mandated to pick up strays and also accept strays and owner animals from the public.

4) Animal pounds / dog pounds typically do little special advertising due to municipal funding issues, but some do advertise their adoptable pets.

5) Animal pounds / dog pounds are controlled  by municipalities which make their own decisions about type of euthanasia to employ, based on Federal regulations and restrictions..

6) Animal pounds / dog pounds typically euthanize unclaimed and unadopted pets, unless sending them for research.
